Who is The Great Reserve?
The Great Reserve is dedicated to protecting the endangered Giant Sequoia by planting and safeguarding new forests across the UK.
Founded to secure a future for these ancient giants, we combine science, stewardship, and community action to fight climate change and preserve living legacies.

Why Sequoia's and not natives?
Climate change is accelerating faster than any single solution can offset, and land available for reforestation is limited. To make every acre count, we plant the trees that capture the most carbon.
Giant Sequoias are unmatched in this – capable of storing up to 10 times more CO₂ per acre than native woodland and holding it safely for over 1,000 years. Each grove we plant also includes native trees typically oak, birch, and rowan to support biodiversity and habitat health.
This isn’t about replacing native species. It’s about protecting the planet and a key ally tree species with a long-term solution – combining the strength of the Sequoia with the diversity of Britain’s native trees.
Is The Great Reserve a registered charity?
TGR is a UK Limited company. Since the project was founded in 2018 no director has taken a salary, with all of us contributing our time and effort pro-bono.
We are not a charity however, as a key component of our project funding comes from carbon sales to corporate buyers, which is considered a commercial transaction and therefore not permitted under charity guidelines.

Track our activity
All the Sequoia’s growth and carbon capture are tracked using Treeconomy’s Sherwood LIDAR, a drone-based system that measures canopy growth and converts it into accurate carbon removal data.
Every scan is independently audited by the Soil Association under FSC® Ecosystem Services standards, meaning your tree’s contribution is scientifically verified - not estimated.
